Bush Blitz Tactical Taxonomy Contracts for 2009-2010

The following projects were successful in receiving $5,000 contracts:

Project Title: Description of new species of Austromirini (Insecta: Heteroptera: Miridae) from the 2009 and 2010 Bush Blitz Surveys

Grantee: Professor Gerry Cassis

Description: Professor Cassis will be describing new species of plant bugs that have been collected on Bush Blitz surveys.

Project Title: Ten new species of Tasmanian Snails and Taxonomic Training, Dr Kevin Bonham

Grantee: Dr Catherine Young

Description: Dr Bonham will publish new species of snails collected from the Tasmanian Bush Blitz Survey.

Term: One year

Project Title: The study of genera Arthropodium, Caesia, Tricoryne, Lomandra and Thysanotus (Asparagaceae), Abutilon (Malvaceae), Drosera (Droseraceae), and Solanum (Solanaceae)

Grantee: Dr Terry Macfarlane

Description: Dr Macfarlane will be further studying suspected new species of plants belonging to several genera collected on the Bush Blitz surveys and will describe those species confirmed as new.

Project Title: Incorporating Bush Blitz and other collected material into descriptions of Australian Beeflies (Bombyliidae) using Cybertaxonomic methods

Grantee: Dr Christine Lambkin

Description: Dr Lambkin will use cybertaxonomic methods to document newly discovered species of Australian Beeflies (Diptera: Bombyliidae), using new material collected through Bush Blitz surveys.

Grantee: Professor Gerry Cassis

Description: Professor Cassis will describing species of lace bugs collected from Bush Blitz surveys during 2009 and 2010.

Project Title: Resolution of problematic individuals of Cyclorana frogs from the Bourke region acquired during Bush Blitz surveys

Grantee: Dr Francis Lemckert

Description: Dr Lemckert will be studying populations of unusual looking burrowing frogs found during the Western New South Wales/Queensland Bush Blitz survey.

Project Title: To describe two newly discovered species of plant bugs from the genus Orthotylus (Heteroptera: Miridae: Orthotylinae) inhabiting native Cyprus pine (Callitris columellaris) from the Bush Blitz surveys of the Avon Wheatbelt region of WA

Grantee: Dr Celia Symonds

Description: Celia will be describing and publishing two new species of plant bugs that were found inhabiting the native Cyprus pine during the West Australian Bush Blitz survey. With this discovery, there are now 37 Orthotylus species known from different species of native Cyprus pine across Australia.

Project Title: Description of new species and redescriptions of species in the genus Paropsisterna (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Grantee: Dr David de Little

Descrption: Dr de Little will describe five new species of beetles and redescribe 17 species, including two new species collected from the Tasmanian Survey, one of which has recently been identified attacking cultivated eucalypts in Ireland.

Project Title: Systematic studies in Craspedia (Asteraceae) Tasmania

Grantee: Dr Andrew Rozefelds

Description: The billy button daisies (Craspedia) remain poorly studied in Tasmania. Dr Rozefelds and colleagues will attempt to resolve some species of the daisy family collected on the Tasmanian survey, some of which may be endangered.

Project Title: Study of undescribed species of Geometridae (Lepidoptera) collected on the Western Australia Bush Blitz Survey

Grantee: Dr Catherine Young

Description: Dr Young will describe three new species, redescribe four existing species and revise two genera of moths and butterflies from the West Australian survey.

Project Title: Tasmanian Land Snails (Pulmonata: Charopidae)

Grantee: Dr Kevin Bonham

Description: Dr Bonham will be describing four species of snails, specimens of which were found on the Tasmanian Bush Blitz survey. In the process, Dr Bonham will be able to better classify some other snails that have been incorrectly classified in the past.
